Having a teenager return home after attending a treatment center can cause fear for both parent and teen. As a parent you can begin with these 3 nextsteps.
1.) Choose a quality or characteristic ( a “stand”) that you will live by each day. For instance,”Joy” and regardless of your circumstances for the day abide in Joy. You may also consider; Acceptance, God’s will, Love, Humor, Fun,Trust, picking a “stand” will set your frame of mind to empower yourself.
2.) Be present to what shows up in your day without judgment or blame, for both yourself and your Teen. Keep your expectations reasonable. Change takes time.
3.) Be responsible for your well being. Taking good care of your own needs will allow you to be your best.
Being intentional with these small nextsteps will allow for a new way of communicating in the Nextstep of your Teens recovery.

Often times when dealing with a teen who is struggling with drugs and or alcohol addiction the NextStep begins with the parent showing up responsible. As opposed to the victim ( someone who has been done to).
Just what does this look like?
As the Parent you are responsible for your actions not your teens.
- Be accountable for your interpretations and behaviors, respond to them rather than react
- Be at cause for action and solution rather than explanation or self-protection
- Be truthful in what has been done and not done on your part, what’s the most powerful NextStep you can take in support of your teen?
- Being responsible is not to be confused with blame or credit
- Being a responsible Parent you are empowered by your actions and results
- Being a responsible Parent you are not restricted by your circumstances but have freedom to act from choice
Operating out of a context of responsibility you may not be able to make your teen stop their using or drinking but you will be more likely to win their cooperation in taking their NextStep towards their own recovery.
